Our Vision, the Beacon that guides everything we do is:
“To support, develop and promote the art forms of the moving image, by identifying and rewarding excellence, inspiring practitioners and benefiting the public.”
BAFTA stands alone as a champion of excellence in the creation of films, television and video games. The art forms of the moving image have never carried so much weight with the viewing and playing public. But the pressure to compromise on quality and standards is intense. Safeguarding the health and future development of those art forms is crucial not just to culture, but to society, too.
A central part of that mission is the Academy’s commitment to bringing the knowledge and insight of leading practitioners to the widest possible audience; to encourage both producers – the industry – and consumers – the public to be more demanding of what we see on our screens.
The Academy is a registered charity and relies solely on the support of the industries it represents and on the wider corporate community to fund its year round activities. All funds raised at Screen Dreams will go towards the Academy’s charitable/educational Learning and Events programme.
MediCinema
MediCinema creates on-site cinemas in hospitals with big screen, 35mm projector, Dolby surround sound, retractable tiered seating and nurses instead of usherettes.
Through the magic that is cinema, MediCinema enriches the quality of life for patients, young and old, including those in beds and wheelchairs by transporting them far away from the reality of their hospital life and allowing them to be somewhere else.
MediCinema brings therapeutic benefits and cheers patients’ spirits, whether they be short stay, long stay, or even terminally ill, by regularly screening current movie releases in the all-encompassing environment of a state-of-the-art cinema.
A full programme of films is being screened at the first MediCinema, St Thomas’ Hospital London, where we also screen special matinees for the young patients of the Evelina Children’s Hospital, and at MediCinema Glasgow for the patients of The Royal Hospital for Sick Children. We are presently raising funds for Newcastle, in order to bring to fruition the plans to install a MediCinema for the patients of the Royal Victoria Infirmary. We have successfully completed a feasibility study for Stoke Mandeville and are in discussions with several other hospitals around the UK.
