Pupils at Morley High School in Leeds were given a practical lesson in makeup special effects when BAFTA organised a VIP Visit in support of the FILMCLUB initiative. Academy Members Mike Bates and Mike Stringer of Hybrid FX demonstrated their craft by helping the children create wounds, scars and disguises using prosthetics, fake blood and makeup.

Events: FILMCLUB logo FILMCLUB was founded by film director Beeban Kidron and educationalist Lindsay Mackie to give children weekly access to a diverse range of films through a network of after-school clubs. FILMCLUB is free to schools and will be rolled out nationally to over 7,000 institutions over the next three years. As well as providing access to an extensive library of current and back catalogue films, the initiative also arranges for guests from the film industry to visit the FILMCLUB members.

"What’s been amazing has been the way the kids have reacted," said Phil Hardwick, a teacher at Morley High School. "They’ve seen film come to them. It’s actually making it real."
