We’re delighted to welcome you to the Awards in 2009 – the first year that GAME has partnered with BAFTA - to honour and celebrate the wealth of talent in the video games industry.

It’s been an incredible year which has proved again that truly innovative ideas and a relentless creative spirit can bring enjoyment and entertainment to millions of people. For those of us who have been in this industry for more than a decade, it is a delight to see the variety of customers who now buy and enjoy video games on a regular basis.

History will record 2008 as the year when video games again smashed entertainment sales records, generating the level of media coverage usually enjoyed by blockbuster cinema releases, but within the context of unprecedented challenges in the wider economy.

We are very fortunate to have such a high level of creative talent as the foundation of our industry. This creativity has driven growth for more than twenty years and will continue to lead our industry forward. It has continually broken moulds - moving the industry away from ‘tried and tested’ genres to new concepts and ideas that have excited and inspired people who had never played games before. This is what makes our industry genuinely world-class and tonight’s nominees are rightly recognised as its pioneers.

There’s no doubt that the individuals nominated for an Award tonight drove the growth in our market which surpassed almost every other global consumer industry. Historically, these pioneers have found support and inspiration in the UK and we sincerely hope that this will continue in the future.

The future has its challenges given the current economic climate, but there are always opportunities for industries like ours, who work in partnership together to inspire and excite customers.

Tonight’s nominees are pivotal to this and we applaud them all. The competition has never been greater and they each deserve sincere congratulations. They represent an industry that refuses to stand still; an industry which consistently takes the best and builds upon it, and can start concepts from scratch and make them a brilliant reality.
