Over eighty players took part in BAFTA’s first Charity Poker Night in aid of the Muir Maxwell Trust. Tim Wapshott reports.

Congratulations to Halvard Halvorsen, who won our first fully-fledged BAFTA Charity Poker Night. This time around 80 players registered for the knock-out tournament which kicked off in the David Lean room at 7pm sharp on Friday June 6.

Christopher Biggins provided commentary when proceedings reached the final table - adding to the tension of the late-night play-off, along with many raucous belly laughs.

The night proved beyond any doubt that great gameplay - no matter what game - can be engrossing, compelling and very exciting.

All ten players making it to the final table scooped prizes, each winning a Nokia mobile phone. Our top three winners received Nintendo DS handheld consoles with more than £120 worth of DS games. Our overall winner, Halvard Halvorsen, also scooped £100 cash for his card-playing skills.

Some of the proceeds from the night went to Bafta, but our main beneficiary was the Muir Maxwell Trust ( www.muirmaxelltrust.com ) and we wish them well in their valiant endeavours.

Our thanks to the night’s sponsors, N-Gage by Nokia, glu mobile games and Nintendo, Electronic Arts, Disney Interactive and Ubisoft. We are also indebted to Christopher Biggins for his time, enthusiasm and jokes!

Finally, our thanks to all who supported the night, both as players and well-wishers. It was great to see you all and I hope you might support us next time we holler those immortal words, shuffle up and deal.

Tim Wapshott, Bafta Video Games Committee.

The full list of our final table winners: 1 Halvard Halvorsen, 2 Steve Ryder, 3 Alex Bubb. 4 Steve Kilminster, 5 Vincent Scheurer, 6 Louie St Claire, 7 George Layton, 8 Jez San, 9 Kim Flitcroft, 10 Steve Hill.
